## Working principles

Ten principles governing how engagements are accepted, handled and charged for.

**When do we accept an engagement?** We take on an engagement only if we consider ourselves competent for it and have the time required to handle it.

**Which engagements do we decline?** Engagements that would require unlawful or unfair acts or omissions are neither accepted nor carried out.

**How do we keep our expertise current?** We pursue continuing education in order to maintain and develop the expertise our work requires.

**How do we keep clients informed?** We inform our clients about all material steps and developments. In return we expect our clients to provide all information relevant to the matter promptly and accurately, so that we can carry out the engagement well and on time.

**How long does our duty of confidentiality last?** We are bound to confidentiality regarding our clients’ business and private affairs, and we remain bound after the engagement has ended. Employees and cooperation partners involved in our work are placed under the same obligation.

**How do we safeguard our independence?** We watch over our independence — professional and financial — and accept no benefits that would endanger it or that are unknown to the client.

**When is an engagement ruled out by a conflict of interest?** An engagement is ruled out where a conflict of interest threatens: when several clients pursue opposing interests in the same matter, or when the matter is known from earlier work and that knowledge would be exploited.

**How do we handle assets entrusted to us?** Assets belonging to others are handled with particular care.

**When do we name references?** We name references only where our clients have expressly agreed to it.

**What do we measure our fees against?** We hold ourselves to fees that stand in reasonable proportion to our work and to the responsibility involved in the individual case. The fee must be fair — and so must the client when paying it, so that we can concentrate on the matter at hand.

- until 1982: School and military service — Born in 1963 in Wissen an der Sieg, school-leaving examination there in 1982, followed by military service.
- 1983–1988: Law studies — Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. First state examination in 1989.
- 1989–1992: Legal traineeship (Referendariat) — Koblenz Higher Regional Court (Oberlandesgericht). Second state examination in 1992.
- 1991/92: First postgraduate degree — German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer. Graduated as “Magister rerum publicarum” (Mag. rer. publ.).
- early 1990s: Research work for the German Bundestag — Assistant to Ulrich Schmalz (member of the Bundestag, CDU) in Bonn, focusing on international economic cooperation. In parallel, publication of scholarly essays on the relationship between state and church in Germany, with particular regard to the social sector.
- 1994–2004: Lawyer in his own practice — Self-employed practice as a lawyer.
- 2001/2002: Second postgraduate degree — Postgraduate studies in business administration at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, together with the Koblenz Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the European Business Academy. Graduated as “Master of Global Management” (MGM).
- since 2002: Management consultant — Focusing on strategy and law.
- 2007–2024: Freelance legal cooperation — Cooperation with several law firms.
- 2011: Training as a mediator — Under the criteria of the German Mediation Act.
- since 2012: Managing director of Confluentes Rheinland GmbH
- since 2016: Managing director of Rheinland Enterprises GmbH — A company for trade, investment and project development, based in Neuwied.
